Brand Strategy

The State of Branding in Africa.

Brand growth in Africa increasingly depends on a difficult combination: cultural fluency, practical value, recognisable identity and earned trust. Global gloss without local usefulness is losing power.

The decision it serves

How to build relevance, trust and distinction across markets.

Central finding, 2026

What changed in African brand building in 2025 and the operating agenda for 2026.

African optimism rose in 2025, but African brands occupied a historic-low share of the continent's most admired brands. The gap is not solved by identity claims alone. Strong brands convert cultural meaning into dependable quality, value, availability, trust and recognisable assets.

How the study works

One method, kept stable year to year

Public evidence first: official statistics, platform and industry datasets, then reproducible audits of public material. Every figure carries its source, geography and collection date. Continent-wide language is used only where a finding holds across at least three regions and seven markets; otherwise it is labelled by country.

The original layer

What this study measures

A public brand-system and cultural-fluency audit: market adaptation, language, distinctive assets, value communication, representation, proof, privacy cues and cross-channel coherence, coded across a fixed market and category frame.

Where this lands

This study maps to Brand Strategy.

Every finding here lands in the same place: a brand system that is fixed where it must be and adaptable where the market demands it. That system is what Brand Strategy Discovery builds, on our Brandesis framework, in three weeks.
